Job Summary
The Director, Finance is responsible for directing and executing a wide range of functions within the operation's sphere of financial management, including participating in forecasting and operational planning, coordinating accounting and expenditure control activities, planning accounting systems and auditing administrative and individual program financial operations. The Director, Finance is also a member of the management team of LOFT Community Services and contributes to the overall function of the organization.
What You Will Do
Perform Financial Analysis and Prepare Financial Reports.
- Prepare & supervise the planning and development of the agency’s corporate and government annual budgets, and its submission to government.
- Prepare and supervise monthly analysis on income statement and budget expense reports, interpret significant variances and recommend corrective action plans.
- Prepare and supervise year-end financial analysis and support schedules for auditors.
- Provides on-going monitoring and financial forecasts to ensure a balanced financial result.
- Implements and maintains all administrative policies and procedures for proper internal control, and to comply with government directives, practices and policies
- Oversees and directs all financial processes, including AP, AR, month end reconciliations, monthly financial statements, variance and performance analysis, forecasting, and procurement;
- Provides leadership in the areas of business processes, procurement and financial information;
- Maintain financial records and commitments and prepare all documentation related to the provision of financial services for all activities and programs
- Monitor LOFT Community Service's cash position and review reconciliation of bank statements.
- Plan and implement new accounting and budgeting procedures and controls, as recommended and/or appropriate.
- Approve monthly standard and recurring journal entries and supervise input to the system.
- Prepare and provide guidance on year-end closing procedures.
- Recommend improvements as is needed in accounting, budgeting and purchasing guidelines and procedures.
- In consultation with the Senior Director of Finance, is responsible for the selection, performance evaluation, promotion, dismissal of finance staff according to established policy and procedure.
- Recommend changes to finance staff job descriptions and staff deployment to the Senior Director of Finance,
- Interpret LOFT’s financial policy and procedures to staff and monitor implementation of such by staff.
- Build and maintain cooperative staff team in the finance area and provide effective leadership in this regard to the head office staff and LOFT Community Services as a whole.
- Ensure that all finance area staff receive regular supervision and support.
- Identify finance staff training needs and facilitate staff participation in external and in-service training events.
- Foster a departmental culture of engagement, inclusion and transparency, leveraging diversity
- Act as a resource for the Audit and Finance Committee, as requested.
- Advise Managers regarding accounting procedures and controls and monitor all program and administrative budgets and expenditures.
- Develop and build on existing processes and practices to continuously transform LOFT’s approach to financial services.
Other Duties and Responsibility
- Participate, as requested, on Board of Directors Committees.
- Participate in the procurement policy review and development of this department
- Participate in and lead project teams as requested.
- Identify and implement the most appropriate software and hardware resources to be used in the finance area in order to efficiently and effectively meet the budgeting and reporting requirements of LOFT Community Service’s.
- Work as part of a management team committed to the vision of LOFT Community Services in a multi-unit, multi-service setting.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the Finance area, identify problem areas and propose improvements to the Senior Director, Finance
- Perform other related tasks and responsibilities as assigned from time to time by the Senior Director, Finance.
What You Bring
Must Haves
- Chartered Professional Accountant designation required.
- 5+ years’ experience with a minimum of five years’ experience in a senior financial role responsible
- Experience in a public sector setting in an organization that receives funding from the Ministry of Health and the Ontario Health
- Previous financial reporting experience in a not-for-profit organization an asset.
- Previous experience and knowledge of corporate services, procurement, risk management, and decision support.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to establish positive partnerships and work as a leader of a multidisciplinary agency with external agencies, government and funders.
- Strong managerial and leadership skills, with an ability to work effectively with multi- professional groups while facilitating organizational change.
Work Environment
- Combination of walking and sitting for a long period of time.
- Ability to use office equipment and computers.
- Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
